Mojito Cowboys

HOEOCA racesailors were out in force last weekend for Sunsail Regatta 8 and a last craic on the Sunfasts. We had three boats on the water again with @Racesail, El Nino and Mike-t skippering. Congratulations to Mike-t on his first race weekend as skipper and to El Nino for bringing our social programme forward and really getting into the swing of things on Friday evening! All in the best traditions of HOEOCA!

Bleary eyed on Saturday morning we set about pre-race practice with mixed emotions! Race 1 got underway with a testing 3 lap course featuring long reaching legs. Some chose to raise their spinnakers in the gusty wind. Mike-t soon realised discretion is the better side of valour and resorted to jib sailing the broad reach. Maggot had a stormer at the helm of El Ninos boat in Race 2 whilst @Racesail was seen doing an impromptu pirouette before the start, thankfully missing the committee boat by a whisker, later ‘finishing’ aground in Wooten Creek, whoops. Time for a cup of tea and a think!

The answer, Mojitos! So to Cowes before the rush. Top Cat and Fancy Fancy set about their concoction of social glue! 15 litres were produced and quickly downed by the fleet before a brisk walk in the dark up to Egypt Point for a splendid meal at the Holmwood Hotel. For most, the evening ended pogoing to the resident rock band in the Anchor. A few simply staggered back to their bunks.

Sunday morning started with bright blue skies and a promising wind. Most left Cowes with time to mosey down to Bob Kemp buoy for the start. Mike-t found himself ‘boxed’ in the marina with an uphill struggle to make the start on time and missing our salute from RN destroyer.

Next year's F40 Mike-t finds an extra berth!

A lengthy three lapper and a weakening wind left trailing boats with a struggle on the last circuit and some were frustratingly timed out. No shilling for the wind machine and a fourth race looked unlikely in only 2 knots of breeze. Whilst milling around over lunch, the immortal words ‘Hey you fatty’ echoed across the water before the race officer brought another famous racesail weekend to a close!

Next event 12-13 March 2011.
